An American language enthusiast gave some Nigerians living in the United States a shock of their life as he swiftly switched from English and spoke in Yoruba language,

The YouTuber Arieh Smith popular known as xiaomanyc wrote that he had spent sometime learning Yoruba because it’s a strictly tonal language.

He visited a number of stores owned by Nigerians in the states to put to test his skills in speaking yoruba which left some of the Nigerians he spoke with in amazement.

The youtuber also made a Facebook post which generated a number of reactions:

So this month I’ve been spending some time learning Yoruba, just one of the over 500 languages spoken in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country. I was interested in Yoruba because as a strictly tonal language, Yoruba being pronounced Yorùbá, it’s an amazing challenge to learn to speak and it reminds me a lot of Mandarin Chinese. Then I decided to go and find some Nigerians to practice with and…we had a good time! People were really surprised when I started speaking Yoruba with them. Finally I tried Nigerian food for the first time and it was incredible. Next time, we’ll do this in Nigeria!”
